Artist's Statement
The paintings and oil studies on view, represent the early beginnings of my journey into landscape painting. I have always loved different types of landscape, the history and the techniques used by artists to describe their passion in painting the wonder of the elements on display by the Creator. I feel a kinship with those artists in their joy, in allowing paint and colour to express the movement of the elements as they travel over the earth’s surface.
Although I went to the Slade School of Fine Art in London, many years ago, my training at the time to be a landscape painter was minimal, and so I consider myself largely self taught. My interest has been to evolve methods of painting a subject, through drawing, grisaille studies, compositional thumbnails , all to help me realize the final painting of the image that inspired me in the first place. I don’t make a heavy use of photographs , I prefer to use detailed sketches.
Because I prefer to work on the site of the painting, I have converted assorted vehicles over the years into a travelling studio. Currently I have a Fiat Doblo Dynamic High Top which perfectly suits the purpose. Pictures of this can be found in the Blog...
These first set of 11 paintings were done over a 3year period, from 2012-15. The locations were, views from my cottage in Mid Wales, and coastal views in the villages of LLanon and LLanrhystud.
Technically I prefer to make my own canvas panels using linen on either MDF board or plywood. The oil studies are produced on acid free mouldmade paper with a linen type texture . When time permits I do grind my own oil colours as well in walnut oil.
I hope in 2015,to move house to live just outside Carmarthen, which will give access to a wide range of scenary from coastal scenes to the Brecon Beacons and on we go..So I am excited at the prospects of the move and the new opportunities it will present.
I hope you enjoy these current paintings and those that are to follow.
